The “espetada” (small meat pieces skeweredon a woodenstick) is probably the most famous dish in Madeira and Porto Santo islands. The different butcher’s shops available display all kinds of meat for all tastes. After being cut, skeweredand seasoned, meat is grilled in huge grills around which there are always groups of people partying.
Meat for the famous “espetada” must be tender, juicy or fatusually known as marbled beef and with a fatty cover on the outside of the meat piece (fleur de sel). Embers must beof non-resinous wood. As soon as embers are ready meat must berubbed with smash edun peeled garlic and laurel in small pieces. Coarse salt must be immediately added and the“espetada” grilled right away skeweredon laurel sticks before salt melts. With fire-red embers, each skewer must rotate gradually till every piece of meat gets a golden and appetizing crust.
From the cablecar, hovering over the city, where buildings rise along side garden sand kitchen-gardens, you can enjoy Funchal’s amphitheatre and bay in a scenario of blues, greensand oranges. The construction process was pioneering as it was partly built in an urban environment before continuing up the mountain. It success fully over came a series of engineering challenges dueto difficult accessibility and having to run over buildings in Funchal.
Getting the 3.2 km long steel cable in place over the city and the mountain side to Monte was an other interesting feat of engineering. Construction started in September 1999. It was inaugurated on 15th November 2000 and immediately opened to the public.

This magnificent replica of Christopher Columbus’s flagship “SANTA MARIA” was built in Madeira island at the small fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. Along with seven local craftsmen, Mr. Robert Wijntje, a Dutchman who has made his home in Madeira, realized his dream when he started building the Santa Maria in July 1997. The construction took one year finishing in July 1998. In that same year the “SANTA MARIA DE COLOMBO” represented the Madeira wine at the Expo 98 in Lisbon, where in just 25 days was visited by 97,016 people.
Take a ride in traditional basket sledges which date back to the early19th century when they were used as a means of transport by the local residents who wanted to travel quickly from the village of Monte to the city of Funchal.
For many years toboggan riding from Monte has been a very popular tourist attraction.The toboggans are driven by two runners, dressed in white and wearing the typical hats known as straw boaters. The descent from Monte to Livramento is approximately 2km and take about 10 minutes to complete. Monte itself is awell-known beauty spot famous for its beautiful lush gardens and splendid views over the city and beyond. The route to Livramento is in a very picturesque area and a thrilling ride of up to 48 km per hour is guaranteed!
